Internet

Wired magaine, an online publication, has an article on web 2.0,
http://www.wired.com/culture/education/news/2007/03/learning2_0
that is right on the spot with what I am using for my topics.
I used Google for my search. I did find a lot of blogs and could have kept browsing but this Wired article is just what I wanted.

Another reputable website is that of the ALA TechSource:
http://www.techsource.ala.org/ala-techsource-online.html
To completely access all their information you must have a paid subscription but it would be worth it for reading and archives access to Library Technology Reports.

Both of these are pertinent to my topic of library and internet technology. They were both found using Google.

Multimedia

This video is fascinating to me. It is on Virtual Reality. The last I was in virtual reality was when I was listening to Michael Crichton's Disclosure. In my mind I could be right there and see what they were doing in VR. (That's why I don't usually listen to audio and drive in town at the same time.) Watching this video you can see how much closer to VR we are actually getting. This could apply to a whole new library technology and a whole new media to provide for the patrons. I think this is a very exciting technology for our future.

Another video:

In the YouTube video bar should be this "ER" spoof from the Arlington Heights Memorial Library on Technical Services. This is a good take on technical services.
YouTube has many library videos and some of them are very entertaining. Any positive exposure and experience gained by watching these is a good thing. There are also some on direct videos used in class such as the one on "The machine is us". We in the library world enjoy knowing that there are other out there like us and that we share common issues.

Citation Pearl Growing and Worldcat, # 6d

I am using a book from a previous search called High Tech, High Touch: library customer service through technology by Lynn Jurewicz and Todd Cutler as my pearl.

The additional search terms listed for this book are:
Libraries and the Internet. Public services (Libraries) -- Technological innovations. Customer services -- Technological innovations. Library Web sites. Dienstverlening. Bibliotheken. Informatietechnologie.
From this list I can add customer services or technological innovations to my next search to grow my pearl.

I added the layer of customer services and got these hits:

Libraries, the First Amendment, and cyberspace :what you need to know / Author: Peck, Robert S.
Publication: Chicago : American Library Association, 2000

The option for more like these or more by these authors is a good choice also to find good hits.

Specific Facet First in LibLit, # 6c

For the specific facet first search I used LibLit database and for the search used
S1 web 2.0 in library technology
and got an excellent hit:

Title:
The Parallel Information Universe
Personal Author:

The writer analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of several Web 2.0 technologies--virtual worlds, social networks and personal digital devices. He also considers the exciting prospects that these new technologies offer for traditional library functions and provides a number of recommendations for librarians to follow in the future.

I'm not sure if using "in" made this a browse or disallows it as a specific facet but after searching with these same terms so many times it gets better hits to have that facet. It covers what I want to get. I could have searched for just [web 2.0] or for [library technology] but then I already know they will bring up more hits not specific enough for me and I would have to go in and add more terms so this was my choice for this search.

Successive Fractions search in BIP #6b

I used advanced search in BIP and added the limiters of English language and United States publishers.
S1 was technology or instruction and returned 730 hits - on to revise search -
S2 I then added internet or computer and got 159 - then revised search-

S3 to that set I added library or libraries (librar* did not work) and got 20 hits.

This was hit #1

1-20 of 20 results
-->
The Blue Book on Information Age Inquiry, Instruction and Literacy
Author: Callison, Daniel et al. Publisher: Libraries Unlimited, Incorporated ISBN or UPC: 1-59158-325-X (Active Record) Format: Trade Paper Date: Sep 2006 Price: $45.00 Market: United StatesAvailability: Readily Available LC Class #: ZA3075 Dewey#: 028.7071 ISBN 13: 978-1-59158-325-7

My first search before this turned up 204356 hits so I could have shown that but I chose to add the 2 limiters first because they would be appropriate in real life. This search in Books in Print turned up mainly textbooks and although interesting, that is not what I was looking for.

Building Block Search & ERIC Competency #6a

The first six hits that I got from my building block search in LISTA using the set:
S1 = technology or literacy (a stretch but it worked)
S2 = web 2.0 or cyberculture
S3 = information or resources

The internet is certainly changing out culture. I don't think it's killing it but it is definitely changing it faster than I have ever seen before. We see a lot of the changes in our workplace, the library. People need their internet and the fast information that it provides. With our quick paced world we all expect instant information.

RSS Feed competency

Today I've added the RSS feed from ALA, the tech source RSS feed for their blog. This was done using the instructions given us and was not as hard as I thought it was going to be. This RSS feed has some interesting reading on it (and creative writing) about blogging and technology.

The web address for this site is http://www.techsource.ala.org/

The rational for inclusion is the technology content. The current page today is discussing the open source and Evergreen that is mentioned in the podcast post.

Podcast competency

This purpose of this post is to provide a link to a podcast. I have enjoyed the short ones that have been used for class purposes. I have found one that is an interview with Karen Schneider whose blog is the Free Range Librarian. This is a long podcast, 40 minutes, but it discusses what Open Source Library software has to offer.
http://talis-podcasts.s3.amazonaws.com/twt20080527-Karen_Schneider.mp3
An very interesting concept for library automation.
My source for this was from Talking with Talis , http://talk.talis.com/ .

The link to Karen Schneider's blog is : http://freerangelibrarian.com/
She is a most interesting and entheusiastic person and is the Community Librarian at Equinox, the support and development company for Evergreen open-source library software.

Competency 2 - Related Blog

Using Google blog search I found this blog called Library Lines authored by Mary Rindfleisch, the assistant director at the Ridgefield Library in Ridgefield, CT :http://ridgefieldctlibrary.blogspot.com/2007/04/while-my-last-post-focused-on.html
In this blog Ms. Rindfleisch discusses many public library issues and current technology trends, such as web 2.0.
This blog pertains both to my kind of library and my topic.

The first post

This blog is created for Information Storage and Retrieval class at TWU. I'm not the world's most prolific writer or even a writer at all, but I will give it a shot and see how this goes.
The purpose of this blog is to demonstrate competency in this field of creating and maintaining a blog.
My type of library is public libraries and the field of interest is technology.
